After Much Ado...Sex and the City is Finally Here!

Yep, you heard me. Finally. After four years of anxious waiting and wishing and hoping, the fabulous New York gals of Sex and the City are back, and better than ever. I really mean that. I've been watching each and every media report pertaining to the movie, the premieres, etc., and it seems like Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte, and even Mr. Big have gotten better with age. Well, it's only been for years...but that's like a decade in showbiz.

When we first left off, Carrie was back in New York with Big, Samantha was with boyfriend Smith, Charlotte and Harry were planning on adopting a little girl from China, and Miranda was living with Steve, Brady, and her mother-in-law Mary. All in all, the series ended on a very high note because it seemed as though everyone was at piece and happy with their lives. However, Sex and the City is a show filled with drama and intrigue...and I can only assume the movie will be no different. Although the movie is sure to be fabulous, I have to admit that I'm most excited about the fashion.

Here we have the four glamour gals in a clip from the movie. Samantha is wearing a red Thierry Mugler jacket, matching Valentino skirt, and a Fendi bag. Miranda is in an Alberta Ferretti dress with shoes by Luciano Padovan. Ms. Carrie Bradshaw is decked out in a full Ralph Lauren outfit with her signature Manolo Blahniks. Last but not least, Charlotte York is ever-so-classy in Prada.

$575.00

It has often been said that New York City is the unofficial 5th character of Sex and the City, so I found it to be extra strange that the movie had its first official premiere in London. Anyway, here are the four ladies, chic as can be.

Let me start with Sarah Jessica Parker in what some have called the most controversial outfit she's ever worn. The dress and shoes are by Alexander McQueen, but the peculiar aspect of the look is easily the Phillip Treacy hat. It basically looks like a little hat with a tree sprout growing out of it. Haute or not? I say not...but SJP really wanted to make a fashion statement in probably the biggest movie premiere of her life, and she did just that. Cynthia Nixon is wearing a black lower-than-low cut Calvin Klein, Kim Cattrall is in a red Vivienne Westwood dress, and Kristin Davis is wearing a vintage fuscia number.

Their next stop was Berlin, Germany. Sarah Jessica Parker dazzled in a body-hugging Versace, Kristin Davis wore a green 40's style Oscar de la Renta dress with black Louboutins, Cynthia Nixon looked refined in a sleek low-cut black gown, and Kim Cattrall wore a very complicated, slightly unflattering orange dress.

And now for the big guns...the New York City premiere! At last! The ladies did not disappoint. The theme of the night was clearly metallic (with the exception of Cynthia Nixon in white). Let me start with my favorite. Sarah Jessica Parker looked AMAZING in Nina Ricci (and redeemed herself for the previously mentioned tree-hat). Up next: Kristin Davis who looked stunning in a pleated gold Donna Karan creation. Cynthia Nixon was very ethereal in a white Narciso Rodriguez gown. Finally, Kim Cattrall looked über trendy in a strapless Vivienne Westwood.

SJP...the Most Influential Trendsetter I Can Think Of

Sarah Jessica Parker is a fabulous Hollywood actress, designer, wife, and mother. I wanna call her the trifecta, but she has four things going on and I don't know the word for that. Regardless, SJP is an Ohio native, and she often talks about the hardships her family face as she was growing up. She comes from a big family with a not-so-big income. I specifically remember her mentioning the fact that she shopped at thrift stores and qualified for free school lunches. This trying past is what makes her success that much sweeter.

Not only is she an icon for the ages, but she still works like there's no tomorrow. I guess that's one good thing about growing up with little money. You grow up to have an admirable work ethic. Parker has an acting career that spans decades.

She began in theater (like just about everyone else), and developed into a TV actress. In 1982, Parker co-starred in the sitcom Square Pegs for a season. I've only seen one episode of this show and I really liked it. It reminded me of The Wonder Years and The Facts of Life put together. After Square Pegs, she began to make a name for herself in film. In my opinion, her two best roles were in Girls Just Want to Have Fun and the classic Footloose. Why these two? Obviously, it's because they're funtastic and make me wanna get up and dance. Yeah, I'm a dork.

Although SJP has a movie career to die for, she's probably most famous for her portrayal of Carrie Bradshaw in HBO's Sex and the City. I've seen every single episode of this show and it reeks of glamour, style, and awesomeness. This show is the definition of revolutionary because I can literally watch any given episode and note at least a couple of trends that started as a result. I'm all about the clothes, so I pay attention to style trends the closest.

The first huuge trend can be summed up in one word...Manolo. Without this show, I probably would't even know how to pronounce, spell, or spot a Manolo Blahnik. Now, these swank shoes have become a staple for everyone and anyone in the fashion world.

Another notable trend is easily the flower on the shoulder. Whether it's a big blooming rose or just a something small, Carrie Bradshaw made it cool to attach a single flower to the shoulder of your blouse.
Chanel $3,075.00

Another Sex and the City craze is the personalized name necklace. Bradshaw famously wore a necklace that had a "Carrie" pendant attached. Man, those things were everywhere. These necklaces then went from saying your name, to some other vanity statement such as "DIVA" or "BRAT." I still prefer the names.

One more fad was started by Sarah Jessica Parker herself...the babydoll dress. I can't begin to count how many red carpet events I have seen Parker attend wearing one of these beauties. I wouldn't say that babydoll dresses necessarily went out of style, but SJP bought back the frilly fairytale dress with a bang. Here she is at the 2004 Golden Globes in Chanel couture dress with Bulgari jewelry. With this dress on, they HAD to give her the trophy (and they did).

Maternity Mania

Handbag...check. Shoes...check. Jewelry...check. What's missing? The newest celebrity accesory...the baby bump. Everyone who's anyone is having a baby. Women having babies isn't exactly a new science, but it seems like Hollywood mothers are getting younger and younger each day. Case in point: Jamie Lynn Spears. This TMZ darling is frequently featured on the show and although I thoroughly enjoy watching (and laughing at) her four-wheeling antics, I tend to forget that she's only 17!

Here she is in Baton Rouge, LA where she registered for baby gifts at Babies R' Us. Please note that the caption on her shirt reads "The rumors are true." I guess this means that she's marrying Casey Aldridge. Congrats.
$33.99

Jessica Alba is another young Hollywood starlet who's expecting. Supposedly, she and boyfriend Cash Warren are having twins! Even better, she's a full ten years older than Ms. Jamie Lynn! Good for you Jessica. Finally someone sets a good example. Here she is looking spectacularly pregnant at the 2008 Oscars in a plum Marchesa gown.

Pregnancy is a miracle and people are generally happy during this time in their lives, but nobody embraces motherhood quite like Tori Spelling. She loooves being pregnant. She's already had a son (Liam) with hubby Dean McDermott, and now she's expecting a girl. Hooray for Donna! Man I miss 90210. Here's the lovely Tori Spelling in a Chiarakuza Dallas top, Jimmy Choo gold ballet flats, and flattering black capri pants.
$365.00

Gwen Stefani is a fashion genius, known for her label L.A.M.B. On top of that, she is pregnant with her second child. Stefani epitomizes the glamorous mother-to-be glow, but she does it in her own unique way. She opts for an earthier Mother Earth (pun intended) look. Her signature is definitely the tunic-style dress with lots of bright colors and embroidery. This proves that Gwen Stefani can literally wear anything and still look chic. If I didn't love her so much I'd hate her.

My absolute favorite A-list mother-to-be was easily Nicole Richie. I use past tense because she's already had her daughter (Harlow Winter Kate Madden) with bf Joel Madden. Before she became pregnant, she was mostly known for her emaciated body frame. There was speculation of an eating disorder, but she claims that she's hypoglycemic. Lucky for her, the pregnancy allowed her to gain weight so people would stop giving her so much flack for being thin. Although she's no longer pregnant, she's on this list because I believe that she's revolutionized maternity fashion. She made it cool to be pregnant.

Here she is sporting a very casual white tank, black flip flops, black leggings, red Missoni scarf, and black Givenchy Nightingale bag. Comfy and casual, but still uber trendy.
$1,995.00

She even made it cool to wear a bikini while with-child...

Simpson Revolution!

  • Well the new's just in...Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz are now officially married and expecting. Wow. This is quite the drastic turn of events considering that just a couple of years ago it was Jessica Simpson living in wedded bliss and Ashlee was just "Jessica's sister" who acts/sings/dances/whatever Papa Joe Simpson tells her to do. The tables have turned and now Jessica is alone and lonely (Tony Romo dumped her), and little sis Ashlee is going all domestic. In case it's not obvious, I prefer Ashee to Jessica...anyday. Anyway, I'm gonna stop ranting about how Ashlee's superiority and just talk about the clothes.
  • Ashlee Simpson is the definition of the term "metamorphosis." Why, I remember just a few years ago she played the sassy but kind-hearted Cecilia on 7th Heaven. Now, she's all rock & roll and black nail polish. To be fair, I should mention that during her MTV reality show The Ashlee Simpson Show she revealed that her darker, more mysterious side is truer to her personality. She immediately dyed her hair black, and her nails, as well. Kudos. I definitely prefer the more down-to-earth personality that she has been able to embrace thanks to her new look and style. This initial "dying of the hair" ritual was just the first of many ploys to morph her look and face. She's been platinum blonde, back to black, bronde, and now redhead, had a nose job, a new chin. Throughout all of these drastic changes, she's remained chic and stylish. Rock on.

Check out Ashlee before the plastic surgery, and after

Here she is rocking the bronde hair and a BCBG dress at the 2007 VMA's.

For the 2008 Kids' Choice Awards, she managed to look very sophisticated (almost too sophisticated for a kids' event), in a strapless Alexander McQueen dress, bright orange wedges, and Chanel accesories.

Now for classic Ashlee Simpson... sweatshirt with the hood UP, skinny jeans, punk-looking shoes, eyeliner, and an oversized bag. I like. Here she is in True Religion jeans, and a COAT...in LA!!! Oh the lengths people will go to look cute these days.

And finally...the hair transformation. I've already mentioned that Ashlee dyed her hair from blonde to jet black on her MTV show, but then she drastically dyed it to platinum blonde.

Then to bronde...

Then to a brownish reddish...
One of these days, all of her hair will fall out due to sheer frustration.
